This Zoom webinar celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Eileen Southern's landmark book, The Music of Black Americans. It will be a conversational panel contemplating various aspects of Southern's scholarly and creative endeavors. These include her scholarship on African American music, European music, and music theater; her interest in visual studies; and her roles as performer and institution builder.
Each speaker will read a letter they've written to Eileen Southern; the letters will be followed by a group discussion. The session will also feature a short film and brief recorded performances.
